In chapters 11-12 Bud gets to know Lefty Lewis and befriends him. Lefty Lewis's daughter makes Bud breakfast and Bud meets Lefty's grandchildren. Like Lefty, they are sarcastic too.Lefty Lewis sends a telegram to Herman E. Calloway and it says that Bud is okay. Then they head off to Grand Rapids. Later on in chapter 12 Bud makes a deal with Lefty Lewis. Lefty Lewis says he would give Bud 5 minutes to talk to his father. If he's not back by then he'll come and bring Bud's suitcase in for him. At that point Bud sees his father, (Herman E. Calloway) for the very first time!
